Welcome back to Radiology Connect. Today, we are breaking down the architectural and regulatory non-negotiables for setting up a dual OPG and CBCT dental imaging department under the latest Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) safety codes.
The Single-Machine Mandate & Spatial Planning
AERB strictly dictates that Orthopantomography (OPG) and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) units must reside in independent, adjoining rooms to isolate the higher kVp scatter generated by CBCT equipment.
- OPG Suite: Minimum 13.0 m² area with no linear wall measuring under 3.0 meters.
- CBCT Suite: Minimum 15.0 m² area to accommodate 360-degree gantry rotation, a 650 mm head clearance for operator access, and ADA wheelchair turning radiuses.
- Peripheral Zones: Integrated waiting areas, reception, and a dedicated computer room must be positioned entirely outside the primary radiation zones to protect public foot traffic.
Structural Shielding Requirements
Executing the ALARA principle requires robust passive barriers to guarantee that exposure limits in uncontrolled public areas remain below 1 mGy/year.
- Primary Beam Walls: 35 cm solid brick or concrete wherever the primary X-ray beam directly intersects.
- Secondary Walls: 23 cm solid brick or concrete to attenuate scatter radiation.
- Vertical Clearances: All unshielded structural apertures, including HVAC vents and exhaust fans, must be mounted strictly above 2.0 meters from the finished floor.
- Lead-Lined Entries: Entrance doors require a minimum of 1.7 mm Lead (Pb) equivalence, complete with a 100 mm perimeter frame overlap to eliminate scatter gaps at the joints.
The Centralized Control Booth
A shared control console positioned structurally between the two suites optimizes technologist workflow while ensuring maximum distance from the radiation source.
- Observation Windows: 1.5 mm Pb glass for viewing the OPG side, and an upgraded 2.0 mm Pb glass for the CBCT side.
- Active Controls: Red "X-ray ON" warning lights above entrance doors, fail-safe door interlocks, and a strategically placed emergency shut-off switch.
e-LORA Commissioning Pipeline
Physical infrastructure must be validated digitally before any clinical operation can begin. Facilities must secure formal Layout Approval via the e-LORA portal, conduct precise pre-operational Quality Assurance (QA) to verify tube leakage limits (capped at 0.25 mGy/hr at 1 meter for dental units), and appoint an accredited Radiological Safety Officer (RSO) to oversee routine TLD badge dosimetry.
